Sunday Photoblog

OK, so a few weeks ago my friend Carrie came up for a visit, and told me she wanted to help me out with fixing up my house. It started innocently, with just removing the bathroom wallpaper to give a fresh coat of paint, but we lost all judgment, and soon the carpet would be up, the vanity and toilet out, and the room was an empty shell of its former self, and we would be committed to putting it back together.

If you want to see more, check out the pictures on my photo album site linked above. With this project off my list, I can move on to other things.

This was the horror before I made any changes to the bathroom, taken the day I moved in, with the previous owners horrid taste forever preserved in photograph. The only thing I changed up until two weeks ago was the shower curtain.

I had to replace the baseboard unit, which was badly rusted with a new one. After we got the floor and everything laid down, I brazed the new unit onto the supply pipes with an acetylene torch.

My lovely assistant Carrie putting on a second coat of paint on the walls after we removed the wallpaper, and repaired the many problems with the drywall with a gratuitous amount of putty.

Everyone should have a Dremel Tool. At 3AM I realized I needed to cut the back of the baseboard heating unit down to size, but I didn't have a hacksaw, which would normally be used for the job. If you need to cut something, but don't have the right tool, the Dremel Tool will cut through anything you want, and it did.

The finished new bathroom. The dry goods are all burgundy, to help cover the fact that the tile, which I didn't want to bother ripping out, has pink flowers on it. I don't really like the tile, but replacing it is a major hassle. I will need to leave some evidence of the previous woman's horrid taste for the next owners anyway.

The new vanity, medicine cabinet, and mirror. I couldn't get the exact vanity I wanted because of plumbing issues, but it still beats what was there.

We put new towel racks and toilet paper holders on as well. You can see those here, sort of.

We finished with enough time left over for Carrie to do some sightseeing. I took her to Gettysburg and also to Valley Forge. This photo is from Gettysburg. Carter is one of Carrie's Family's names, so she's doing the flag waving rebel thing in front of it.

Okay I had read about the pink carpet in the bathroom in your posts before... but it never truly dawned on me until I saw the pic.

My gods what was the previous owner thinking? "I need a urine sponge that you can't just clean out... I'll install a carpet!"

is it just me, or does it look like you'd open the medicine chest and have the knob smack right into the mirror and crack it?

Yeah... it's a problem, but the other alternative would be to have the cabinet blocked by the opening door. I thought about filling in that hole there, but it would have required a days work to do that, and to open and frame a new recess for a front facing medicine cabinet. That bathroom really isn't large enough for one that just mounts on the wall.

Oh, BRAVO on the bathroom! :) It looks so much better. If you keep the shower curtain closed most of the time, you won't notice the flowery tiles too much. Good job! :)
